Mining in Ashes of Creation

Mining is a common skill that is known and used in the majority of MMO games to date. This skill is extremely important as it allows you to mine all different types of veins that can give you a variety of Ores and Gems, which can be used later on at many different processing stations, such as Metalworking, Stone-masonry and Alchemy stations.

Unlike other MMOs, Ashes of Creation offers a unique way of how mining works. In most games, ore veins will appear in a fixed location around the map, which makes the skill very boring as it requires not much exploration and value to it. However, in Ashes of Creation, it offers the complete opposite where these veins will randomly appear in a rough area, but they will have no fixed location where they spawn.

I personally believe this is a better way of doing it for two reasons. One reason is that this allows players to not be able to ‘camp’ these locations. And two, they are much harder to discover, which offers much more value when you find them.

Before we dive into how mining works and what you can do with the resources that you find. You must know that you don’t find gems from mining ore. Instead, you will need to find and mine separate gem veins for gems and ore veins for ore.

Getting Started

Now that we have given you a short introduction to the skill, it’s time to get you a pickaxe and get you out there mining. In order to get yourself started, you will first need to complete some of the quests which are given to you in the starting zone. You are mainly looking for the quest “The Sweat Of Your Brow". As this gives you all the basic tools to get you started, such as a Crude Mining Pickaxe.

If you are unsure if you have got a pickaxe already, you can simply open up your character screen by pressing the “H" key on your keyboard and clicking the artisan tab.

As you have now got the pickaxe, it’s time to get out there and get mining. As there is no set location for any ore, we can only recommend roaming around and looking at the edges of rocky terrain, as ore seems to be more common around this area. We have also noticed better ore, such as copper, spawns much more frequently in higher level zones such as Winstead compared to the starting zones like Lionhold.

You can also use our heat map too, if you wish for rough guidance too.

Here is a list of some ores that you can mine at level 1:

• Basalt
• Granite
• Zinc
• Copper
• Ruby

Below are a few images of what you are looking out for, that you can walk up to and press the “F" key and mine the vein.

What to do with your Ore and Gems

Once you have finished mining, it’s now time to decide what to do with your ore and gems. These can all be used at various stations or even townboard jobs. However, if you have farmed copper or zinc, these are preferably used at the metalworking station where they can be turned into either ingots or fragments. These are needed to make better tools, weapons, armor and accessories.

Ores like Basalt and Granite are typically used at the stone-masonry station, which can be used to make all sorts of crafts. One of the most popular uses for this ore is the weapon and armor molds. As these are usually required when you wish to craft an armor piece or new tool/weapon.

Gems are an interesting one. If you take rubies, for example, they can be grounded at the alchemy station for ruby powder, which can then either be turned into health salve or turned into red ink. Red ink is commonly needed at the Scribing station to create all different types of scribing scrolls that can give you more stats for a temporary amount of time.

These gems can also be cut at the stone-masonry station, which can then be used to create all different kinds of jewelry, such as rings and necklaces. These can also be used to craft survey pylons at the arcane engineering station. Which gives your skills a boost for a short period of time.

How To Progress Further

Now that you know how to mine in Ashes of Creation and you know what to do with the ore and gems that you have mined. It’s now time to explain what you can do next.

To progress further and be able to mine better gems and ores such as Emeralds and Tin. You will need to reach level 10 in mining. This can take alot of time, so we recommend mining all the ore that you see on your travels.

If you wish to speed up the leveling process, you can craft yourself a Novice Mining Pickaxe at a mining station in any major town whenever you get enough resources (mainly copper fragments). This pickaxe allows you to mine at a faster rate, so you can level much faster.

We also recommend speaking to the mining vendor and purchasing yourself a Novice Miner’s Shirt, Novice Mining Satchel. This will allow you to have a better storage bag for your ore and wearing the shirt will give you a better mining quality rating. Novice Mining Survey Pylons are good too, but as they are for a temporary use, we recommend purchasing them later on when you are ready to start crafting.

Once you have hit level 10 in mining, it’s time to find a town that has a Stoneworks building. The Stoneworks have an upgraded apprentice mining station. Which allows you to craft the next tier pickaxe called the Apprentice Mining Pickaxe.

Although you can not use the pickaxe straight away as you MUST talk to the Stoneworks Foreman NPC in plot and upgrade your mining certificate. This will allow you to reach level 20 in your mining skill now and also allow you to mine Tin, Slate, Halcyonite and Emeralds.
